I am very proud to have this opportunity to design
a feed program for our canine heroes of the Animal
Assisted Crisis Response Organization.
The dedication of their owners and the unconditional love of the canine
heroes provide an emotional safe place and sense of hope for those
who are distraught and suffering during a time of crisis. The focus
of this feed program is to provide nutritional support on all levels;
immune, heart, joint, digestive and emotional.
When leaving home to go assist in a crisis it is important to make
a smooth transition from one program to another - this is critical.

WHAT ABOUT MY STRESS? When I travel I change my vitamin routine so it is simple and easy to handle, but I won't go without because it does not take long for my energy level to plummet - I am not a good traveler. With the stress the owner/handler is under doing service work, it is imperative that you care for yourself as well as you care for your dog. So these are some suggestions to get you through - they work, I promise. If you are not already on a vitamin routine, and have this scaled down for your trips, then let me give you a hand with getting one together. Normally I use a lot of liquid supplements but they require refrigeration and a crew to carry them so I have scaled this for you to the basics. You can purchase online a www.Puritan.com a packet of vitamins and minerals specific for men or woman - a box lasts 30 days and they are individually wrapped in packets for each days use. Puritan has great sales..usually buy 1 get 1 or 2 free. ULTRA Vita Man - Pak (for men) MEGA Vita Woman - Pak (for women) Walgreens also has a good product made by Nature's Made which is the same kind of multiple vitamin packets. They are called: Men's Multi-Pak and Women's Multi-Pack and they are reasonably priced. In both product lines they have a good multiple vitamin/mineral plus calcium and B-Complex, and other supplements to keep your energy level.
Generally the amount of B-Complex in a multiple vitamin is not enough for really stressful situations. So it means purchasing a separate B-Complex 100 mg 100 mg - no yeast in it. ALWAYS TAKE VITAMINS WITH FOOD OR THEY WILL MAKE YOU SICK TO YOUR STOMACH. Also without food to combine with, they are ineffective and a waste of your money. For
Energy/Stress/Calming Relief I like this B-Complex from Puritan.com, but you can get one from a health food store. Tell them you want a B-Complex 100 mg - with NO YEAST (You do not want a Stress Complex)...these have lesser amounts of nutrients and you want 100 mg of each of the B's in it to do the job.
It is very important that you do not purchase one
with yeast in it, or you will belch it up all day long, and for some
people it causes stinging when urinating - especially men. (Ouch!)
and nausea. This is a great vitamin group and I can't live without
them - they make my temperament sweet, patient and level and my energy
levels are great. (Most of the time) Mood/Depression Dealing with disasters and those involved with any
kind of Crisis Response team can't avoid the intense emotions that
come with this kind of work. I have found the best over the counter
natural supplement that works with mood enhancement is that of SAMe.
This supplement also helps with joint health. Start with 200 mg daily - and it takes 7 -10 days to get into your system so be patient or double dose the first 3-4 days. Just as a matter of interest - once my body is loaded up with 200 mg a day, I can then back off to 200 mg every other day, or take day off now and then. I can tell when I don't need it because I lay in bed at 2 AM thinking "that closet needs cleaning". So it may take a month for you to find the levels that work best for you - I have found for most people 200 mg a day is perfect, and then every other day works well. In times of great stress/grief - I used 400 mg daily for a while, then back off. In very difficult cases physician will suggest up to 1000 mg a day. I can't imagine but in serious depression situations that amount is often used but that is therapeutic doses for a physician do administer. When my father died I was not able to get past the grief and function on a daily basis very effectively, so I upped my SAMe to 400 mg daily and it made all the difference in the world. I tell people it allows you to "not sweat the small stuff" - it's what makes me so "chipper" all the time. Vitamin B and SAMe make me positive, energetic and upbeat, just a bundle of sunshine (eah?) ABOUT SAMe - All living things contain SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine). The body makes SAM-e from the amino acid methionine. However, you may not be able to obtain sufficient methionine levels simply by ingesting food. In addition, because of age or other factors, levels of SAM-e can fluctuate or decline. Supplementation with SAM-e is the easiest way to increase intake. SAM-e is involved in over 35 biochemical reactions involving enzymatic transmethylation.** The methylation process is the mechanism by which the body rids itself of potentially damaging compounds, synthesizes neurotransmitters, makes components of cartilage, regulates enzyme activity within the cell and maintains the flexibility of cell membranes.** Science has been looking into this remarkable supplement and time after time clinical studies have drawn the same conclusions, SAM-e: • Promotes healthy joint function and comfort** I suggest that if you pack this in your own HIT THE ROAD human emergency kit - that you at least take 200 mg every other day as a matter of habit, so your body does not have to "load up". love that stuff. Stiff neck and shoulders? Stiff back from a lousy
bed while on the road. I have found Valerian Root - 500 - 1000
mg -is a good option. Again test this
ahead of time, you do not want to be in the crisis
situation and have any kind of reaction to your supplements or herbs.
