Note To My Puppy Buyers: Eagle Pack was acquired by Berwind Industries in 2007. Wellness was acquired by Berwind in 2008 and the two companies were merge into a single entity called WellPet LLC. I choose foods according to specific needs, not name on the bag ie: puppy food, senior food etc.. I look at the protein/fat, calcium levels and calories per cup in making a decision about what to feed, for what purpose - especially when it comes to giant breeds special needs. Precise has two lines - the Precise Plus line which is a Holistic line of pet foods, then they have a Super Premium line of foods.

What Food Do I Use for My Puppy?

For large/giant breed puppies from weaning - 7-8 months, I recommend using Precise Plus LARGE BREED ADULT Formula 24% protein/12% fat - it has good levels of calcium to support large breed growth.

Use this place of Eagle Natural pack or Eagle Super Premium Large/Giant Breed Puppy Formula in purple stripped bag, or Eagle Holistic Large Breed Puppy).

The other option to use for your puppy from weaning - 7-8 months is Precise Foundation Chicken/Rice Formula

For small to medium breed puppies I recommend using Precise Plus Puppy Formula

If Precise and Precise Plus is not available in your area, here is a list of better foods. If
a food is not on this list, I have a reason and it is based on a specific criteria.

What To Look For In A Good Puppy Food:

PRECISE PLUS - Holistic Line

Canine Large Breed Adult Formula (My preference for giant breed puppies)

24%protein - 12% fat - Calcium 1.13% - Calories 377 per cup

Works for large/giant breed puppy growth from weaning through adult stages. Works well for senior large/giant breeds. I suggest starting your puppy in this food, then at 7-8 months you can move to the Canine Adult Formula 26/16 if they need more weight or they are highly active.

I like this food for senior large/giant breeds over the regular senior food.

Canine Adult Formula - 26% protein/16% fat - Calcium 1.2%
Calories - 397 per cup

This food works for large/giant breed growth 7-8 months old puppies good for teenagers through adulthood and active seniors.

Puppy Formula - 32% protein /18%fat - Calcium - 1.2%
Calories 398 - per cup

Although this is a puppy formula it is best suited for small- medium dog growth and too much for large/giant breeds. It is also ideal for adults of any breed that are performance dogs; showing, hunting, obedience, agility, rally etc because of it's higher protein/fat content.

Lamb & Sweet Potato - 22% protein/12% fat - Calcium 1.2%
Calories 403 per cup

It is a nice alternative, a low glycemic index diet and multiple meat/proteins based. I think this food would work well for giant breed growth over 8 months of age and for seniors.

Precise Plus has a line of holistic canned meats to compliment their formulas.

Small & Medium Breed Puppy Formula - 29% protein 19%fat - Calcium 1.3% -
Calories 447 per cup.

small medium breed puppies and small breed adults (toy and mini breeds). A higher protein formulation to help puppies build proper muscle during this critical life stage and good for small breeds with "hummingbird" metabolisms.

Not for large/giant breed growth under 12 months of age but would work to hold weight on show dogs of adult large/giant breeds. (equal to Eagle Sm/Med Puppy - Yellow Bag)

Large & Giant Breed Puppy Formula - 27% protein 16% fat - Calcium 1.2%
Calories 427 per cup.

Growth problems in giant breeds are due to intake vs output. On more caloried dense diets such as this, you can feed but you have to watch the amount you are feeding so as not to over feed and speed up the growth on giants. I do not recommend it for large/giant breed growth when following the Blackwatch Feed Program -due to the high level of nutrition and pet owners can over feed due to calorie density. This would be fine to use after 10 months of age on giant breeds use my AMOUNT TO FEED CHART.

Foundation Formula (chicken/rice) -24% protein - 14% fat - Calcium 1.28 -
Calories 420 per cup.

for moderately active adult dogs- Complete and all natural nutrition for your dog during his active adult life. Works for Large/Giant Puppy - weaning, growth and adults, very good for Seniors. This food works great for when you have multiple dogs in a family or kennel a good "all life stages/breeds" formula - equal to Eagle Original. (comes in 40# and sometimes 44# lbs bags).

Endurance Formula for highly active adult dogs - 30% protein 20% fat - Calcium 1.3% - Calories 444 per cup

Our super stamina formula for working and sporting dogs or for those that have difficulty maintaining weight. Also supports pregnancy and lactation - (equal to Eagle Power Pack)

Competition Formula for adult dogs - 26% protein - 16% fat - Calcium 1.2% -

An extra protein, extra fat formulation for dogs that are being exercised or shown. An excellent formula for all breeds but especially the Adult Large/Giant breeds who are being shown and supports pregnancy, lactation and weaning formula (use in place of Eagle Original)

for moderately active adult dogs - Developed for dogs with food allergies, this formula doesn't contain wheat, corn, soy, beef, or poultry protein. This will work for large/giant breed growth 8 weeks on, and would work for a giant breed senior formula. (equal Eagle lamb/rice formula)

Senior Formula -18% protein 10% fat - Calcium 1.0 % - Calories 399

for dogs 7 years and older - specifically formulated for aging dogs to help them maintain their ideal weight and avoid obesity. NOT for large/giant breeds due to low protein levels which cause loss of muscle mass and early deterioration of rear muscles.

Light Formula-18% protein 8% fat - Calcium 1.07% - Calories 351 per cup

for less active or overweight dogs - A reduced protein, reduced fat formula for dogs who are less active or overweight. This can not be used for large/giant breeds due to the low protein levels which do not support muscle mass, which can cause a breakdown in rear end muscles. NOT for Puppies. A short term diet. However, this would be a food for dogs prone to pancreas problems. (equal to Eagle Reduced Fat)

ENHANCING KIBBLE WITH VARIETY

VARIETY WITH HOLISTIC CANNED MEATS:

Precise has 4 holistic canned foods you can use, but you can also use any other high quality canned food on the market. Canned foods of poor quality cause excessive gas so if your dog is "aromatic", change brands of canned foods. I use only a couple of spoonsful of canned meat mixed in water for a gravy and pour over the kibble, stir and serve. This is not a problem with Precise canned meats. Grocery store level meats are NOT acceptable. You can also make up Linda's veggie soup mix and use that for a gravy for your dog's food.

VARIETY WITH FRUITS &VEGETABLE: use in moderation:

yogurt, buttermilk berries melons, apples, banana, tomatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, oranges, squash, sweet potato, green beans, zucchini - minced/diced/raw/cooked - they love frozen berries and melon balls!! Pulverized fresh veggies are best for digestion.

NO raw onions, grapes or raisins, macadamia nuts.

One suggestion, if you do not like to take the time to prepare fruits and veggies is to purchase large bags from Costco or Sam's Club or Canine Caviar makes a dehydrated fruit and veggie bag.

VARIETY WITH LINDA'S VERY VEGGIE SOUP

Use 2 large cans of chicken or beef broth - (low sodium for heart or elderly dogs- or homemade). Add LOTS of veggies - carrots, green beans, wax beans, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and couple cloves of garlic. The idea is to use this as the filler so you want it to be hearty and filling.

Do not add additional rice, chicken or other meats from the grocery store to a PUPPY'S DIET, as it will upset the balance of the calcium and phosphorus levels during growth stages. Use only holistic canned meats (balanced in calcium/phosphorus levels).

DO NOT MICROWAVE OR SOAK YOUR KIBBLE IN HOT WATER AS IT WILL DESTROY IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS ON THE DOG FOOD.

About Precise Products - there is no soy, wheat or corn in their product line. All naturally preserved and with all human grade ingredients. Precise is a family owned company with their own manufacturing plants, like Eagle had before the WellPet takeover, which means Precise has total control of the product line from ingredient sources, lab testing and the manufacturing process. This includes testing after manufacturing before going to distribution. Pet Product News states that Precise's manufacturing plant (Texas Farms) has 100% safety record on the plant since it's beginning.
