Holistic Foods Available Overseas

If you live in Europe, India or Asia, I am please to let you know there is there is distribution for Precept Plus and ANF Holistic foods please contact :www.kodopetfood.com to locate a distributor in your country. This company has gone to great lengths to make a top holistic food and to make it available overseas. Here is a link to locate the overseas distributors for ANF and Precept Plus.

For those who do not have the benefits of a quality commercial food and whole food supplements, my intent is to develop a feed program that is based on the indigenous foods available to individuals, in their area of the world. Please discuss this program with your veterinarian and remember, you are ultimately responsibile for your pet's well being.

If you live in SOUTH AFRICA you can now get ProPac Holistic Super Premium Dog and Cat Food -EARTHBORN HOLISTIC dog and cat food. -this is a good choice, expecially in light of the fact that the other foods you have available are not Holistic and not as comprehensive as this food. It has fruits and veggies and PROBITOICS which are critical for wellness.

Introduction ~

Diets made at home are often very unbalanced and cause many orthopedic or growth problems in dogs of all sizes/ages. This program is a better option for owners in this situation. In this article I will provide you with 2 options:

(1) using a commercial dog food kibble with fresh whole raw foods
(2) using a homemade diet - 5 Recipes

OPTION 1. - Using A Commercial Kibble/Dog Food

If you have a commercial dog kibble available to you, choose a moderate protein 22% - 25% and moderate fat 12% - 15% dog food for puppies or adults, and choose one according to this criteria, as opposed to purchasing a food according to the "type" of the food such as (senior, puppy, growth etc). Pick a food with 22% - 25% protein and 12% - 15% fat - this is a range of protein and fat that supports all stages of development. Calcium should be 1.2 - 1.5%

How to Improve a Commercial Dog Food without Unbalancing the Diet

These amounts are based on an Adult Great Dane. For smaller dogs, you will have to reduce the amount suggested.

Owners can improve their pet’s diet by adding the following foods to any kibble dog food.

1). Fresh fruit and pulverized vegetables - 225 grams (1 cup ) divided into 2 feedings.

Daily amount for an adult Giant breed such as a Great Dane, should be 225 grams divided into two feedings, serve on top of kibble. Decrease amounts used depending on the size (puppy or adult) of the dog. If you have a small breed or small puppy you would only want to use a little fruit and vegetables. For example my pug would only get 4 blueberries and a spoonful of minced carrot. Of course one has to use the fruits and vegetables indigenous to the country in which you are living. - (no onions, grapes or raisins for pets!!)

If you have not used fruits and vegetables with your dogs, introduce one at a time to make sure they can tolerate them with no loose stool. Reduce the amounts if there is a stool problem. The veggies you use need to be pulverized, mashed so the dog can digest
it easier. The fresh fruits and vegetables will provide some living "dietary enzymes" lost in
cooking of the commercial food.

2). Meats - raw or lightly cooked ~ chopped/minced - 225 - 450 grams (1 cup) divided into two feedings, morning and evening.

Beef, chicken, turkey, duck, fish (fish must be cooked) or whatever is the protein/meat source in your country. I do not advocate bones unless you have a way of pulverizing the bone along with the meat so it will not be sharp. NO COOKED BONES !! They splinter and can puncture the dogs intestines. You can use organ meats, like heart etc, but use liver no more than once a week, it is a filter organ and feed too frequently can cause Vitamin A overdose. 5).

If you are using raw meat added to your kibble you need to use 1000mg of Calcium Citrate w/ Vitamin D
tablets or powder added to the meat portion to keep it balanced in phosphorus and ratio. Do not use a calicum supplement with phosphorus in it. If you do not have access to Calcium Citrate w/Vit D, you can use 4-5 raw washed chicken necks and wings daily. THEY MUST BE RAW!!

3). Yogurt or Kefer - 225 grams (1 cup) divided into two feedings a day.

I highly recommend the daily use of some yogurt or kefir to your animals diet to help balance calcium and phosphorus levels and provide good micro-organisms to the digestive track.

4). Other foods: Milk, - these can be used daily if the dog tolerates it. Eggs can be used to substitute for some of the meat protein. Cheese can be use several times a week in small amounts - 55 grams (1/4 cup).

Warnings: I do NOT recommend adding rice or any grains to any commercial dog food it will disrupt the balance of your dogs calcium and phosphorus levels. Every commercial dog food has more then enough grains in the food so adding more is only going to cause skin, digestion or orthopedic problems in the long term.

  • If you are using a commercial dog food, use Vitamin/Mineral supplement
    only - 2-3 times a week .
  • Do NOT add: Oils, Cod Liver Oil or additional vitamin E supplements or Bone Meal
  • If you have access to Spirulina, seaweed or kelp - give 1/3 the dosage for an adult human when you are feeding a young puppy. Use this 3 times a week on the food. For dogs 60 lbs or more you can dose according to the label for an adult human - 3 times a week.

What If I Don’t Have A Commercial Kibble Available?

If you do not have a commercial dog food available to you from the USA or Canada, then you have to make a homemade formula for your dog. I will give you recipes below which will include supplements and fresh foods.

Option 2 - Recipes You Can Make

These are about 4200 - 4600 calories per recipe - The active adult Great Dane needs approximately 2000 -2800 calories per day divided into 2 meals a day.

These bulk recipes will make approximately 4 meals (2 days) for one adult Great Dane. More is required if pregnant or lactating, less if inactive. The amount you feed to your dog will be determined by the size, age and energy level and you and your vet will have to be the judge of the amount that is needed.

It is very important that you add the calcium citrate(with Vitamin D) to each of these diets and not just give it to the dog. I t must be crushed and mixed evenly into each batch of food you make up . I have balanced the calcium and phosphorus levels so do not vary from the proportions of each recipe. Do not change the amount of calcium citrate per recipe.

(1.) Mutton/Oat Diet

6 cups (486 grams) cooked oats and/or barley
2 lbs (908 grams) (meat) mutton
4 eggs - (133 grams) cooked

1 Tablespoons (15 grams) - olive oil, corn oil, canola
1 teaspoon (5 grams) iodized salt
3500 mg Calcium Citrate/w Vitamin D*

*Calcium Citrate is needed to balance this diet. Pulverize and add to batch. Do Not Use Bone Meal - it has heavy metal contaminants in it. Do NOT used any calcium product that contains phosphorus or you will disrupt the balance of this recipe and can cause health problems for your dog.

Required: Add Daily to Each Meal - the "living enzyme " part of the diet

Yogurt or Kefir - 1/2 cup or (115 grams) at each feeding

Vegetables - 1/2 cup or (115 grams) pulverized raw vegetables (blender or food processor) (green beans, tomato, cauliflower, peas, broccoli, cabbage, kale, squash, zucchini). You can use a mixture of 1 - 2 of these or just rotate what you use daily is important.

Vitamin C Supplementation Dosage: - optional but my preference

25-50 mg of Vitamin C for puppies 8 wks - 10 wks daily
100 mg of Vitamin C for puppies 10 wks - 12 wks daily
250 mg of Vitamin C for puppies 12 wks - 16 weeks daily
500 - 1000 mg of Vitamin C for puppies 4 months - Adult
If they get a loose stool, try a lower dose or a different brand.
If you use Ester C - use a lesser dose, 500 mg of Ester C = 1000 mg of activity.

Supplements I Use:

If you have a good commercial kibble available to you and you want to purchase the supplements that I recommend in my Adult Feed Program or Puppy Feed Program and Puppy Guidelines

This is an excellent Joint Supplement that I use for me and the dogs and they will ship overseas.

If you are looking for a high quality glucosamine joint product, use Liquid Health Level 5000 I have used for some time and they will ship overseas. It also comes in a gallon size to make it worth your while.

I have used it with great success on my dogs and my elderly dogs respond well to joint nutritional supplementation. The amount of glucosamine in better dog foods is minimal, helpful nonetheless, but minimal, so a good joint supplement is ideal especially for any age or breed. I start my dogs during growth stages and continue throughout their adult life. With the large/giant breeds their joints have added stressed, so any thing that can help support them as they age is a positive thing in my opinion.
