A Balanced Bland Diet

A Balanced Bland Diet - For temporary use until digestive problem is resolved.

When a dog has a digestive upset, or has growth problems, the vet often says to put them on a bland diet of chicken/rice. The problem with this diet is that it is very low in calcium and high in phosphorus and on a growing puppy, can send them into HOD (Hypertrophic Osteodystrophy, in a matter of 24-48 hours.

So I offer for your consideration a BALANCED BLAND DIET for temporary use. Please print out or save in your file for future use.

I recommend using:

  • A Liquid Pediatric Vitamin

  • Lactobacillus Acidophilus - friendly bacteria to reestablish the intestinal flora to help stop loose stools. You can use (BacPakPlus, Daily Greens, Fastrack,or go to the local health food store and get a multiple bacteria Lactobacillus Acidophilus product. (click here to go to recommended products page)

  • Canine Bulk Recipe Diet (12 cups)

    • 12 cups cooked white & brown rice 50/50

    • 1 teaspoon salt

    • Dash of garlic - optional

    • 2 cups steamed lean hamburger

    • 2 cups steamed fatty hamburger

    • 3000 mg calcium citrate ground to a powder and mixed in batch. By adding the calcium citrate this brings up your calcium level to a better ratio.

    • 1000 mg of magnesium citrate

Make sure there is NO PHOSPHORUS in the calcium product you purchase.

For variety you can substitute:

  • 1/2 cup of fatty meat for - 3 eggs cooked or chopped or scrambled.

  • 1/2 cup of fatty meat for - 3/4 cup of cottage cheese + 1 teaspoon olive oil

OPTIONAL - diced steamed veggies and also some melon balls or berries
